Youth Summit:
Racism and Civil Society
Canberra 7 May 2001
HREOC brought together young people from across Australia for a National Youth Summit on Racism and Civil Society. The aim of the forum was to gain a youth perspective on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
Participants in the National Youth Summit addressed the major themes of the WCAR and the questions under each theme in the HREOC discussion paper Combating racism in Australia.
These themes were:
- Sources, causes, forms and contemporary manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
- Victims of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
- Measures of prevention, education and protection aimed at eradicating racism.
- Provision of effective remedies, recourse, redress and other measures at the national, regional and international levels.
- Strategies to achieve full and effective equality, including international cooperation.
Recommendations made by the National Youth Forum were presented by delegates at the National Summit on Racism and Civil Society in Canberra on the 7-9 May 2001. The recommendations were also disseminated at the Second Preparatory Committee meeting for the WCAR in late May and during regional consultations across Australia in June and July 2001.
Other youth forums on racism were held in Adelaide, Perth and Sydney.
