Written submissions on the themes of the WCAR

The discussion paper Combating racism in Australia discussed the five themes of the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) and their relevance to Australia. HREOC distributed the paper through the regional consultations and mail outs to parliamentarians, NGOs and interested individuals. The paper was also made available electronically on the Commission's WCAR website.

The discussion paper posed a series of 14 questions relating to the nature and experience of racism and strategies to address it. The paper called for written submissions to the issues. Participants in the 15 community consultations were also urged to raise further issues in writing.

Submissions could be made in writing, by email or through an online form on the WCAR website. HREOC received over 40 submissions from individuals and organisations in every state and territory in Australia. The submissions informed the Commission's preparation for the WCAR and our report on the consultation process.

Moderated bulletin board

In order to stimulate discussion of the themes of the WCAR in Australia, extracts from selected public submissions were reproduced on the website in a moderated bulletin board. It was stressed that the submissions represented the opinions of their authors and their inclusion in the bulletin board did not imply endorsement by HREOC.
