National Summit:
Racism and Civil Society
Canberra 8 - 9 May 2001
The National Summit on Racism in Australia took place in Canberra on the 8 - 9 May 2001. The summit was organised by HREOC, with funding assistance from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in preparation for the World Conference Against Racism held in South Africa in 2001.
The Summit brought together a wide range of leaders from Indigenous and ethnic communities, the media, sport, religion, the arts, business, trade unions, the law, academia, women's organisations, peak NGOs and youth groups.
The aim of the National Summit was to stimulate dialogue about racism in Australia and identify strategies to promote equality and respect among all Australians regardless of their race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin.
Participants in the National Summit addressed the major themes of the WCAR and the related questions raised in HREOC's discussion paper Combating racism in Australia. These themes were:
- Sources, causes and forms of racism.
- Victims of racism.
- Measures of prevention, education and protection.
- Effective remedies, recourse, redress, compensatory and other measures.
- Strategies to achieve full and effective equality, including international cooperation.
