Law, Religion and Human Rights: National Roundtable Dialogue

(In development)

The October 2007 Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration Annual Conference, Cultures and Law, explored the ideal of equality before the law and its application across cultural boundaries within a diverse Australian society.

Participants acknowledged that religious diversity and its intersections with the law increasingly pose a considerable ‘challenge’ to judicial decision making in the Australian system.

Issues of freedom of religion and religious accommodation in law are being debated in courts throughout Australia. These debates are often closely associated with broader community discussions around multiculturalism, immigration, settlement and integration.

HREOC will bring together members of the judiciary, key legal representatives, academics and religious and community leaders for a national roundtable dialogue to explore and analyse these issues in detail.

The discussion will address the human rights issues, ethical considerations and practical implications for the administration of law.

The principal focus of this roundtable will be on issues affecting Muslim communities. A report will be developed which highlights the key questions and outlines a strategy for future work in the area.

The ‘roundtable dialogues’ will be held in mid to late 2008.
