Cinemas haven't always been wheelchair accessible, and even today some renovations leave a lot to be desired.
Years ago I spent a lot of energy battling with cinemas to improve their access.
While I applaud the intention of cinemas to improve their universal access, it strikes me that an exemption would open the way for retrograde planning.
The cinema has become the most easily accessible entertainment outing, and to enshrine such an exemption would offer an unscrupulous cinema proprietor with an opening to disregard best practice in universal access.
I agree that universal access is best incorporated at the planning stage of a new cinema.
I also believe every refurbishment needs to take account of the needs of all patrons.
I look forward to the day when Australia has a reputation for gold standard access for everyone.
