Disability Discrimination Act compliance strategies
An invitation to business and government organisations with responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act
This is a reminder to business and government organisations with responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act that the Australian Human Rights Commission's disability rights policy unit (Commissioner Sev Oxdowski, Deputy Commissioner Graeme Innes and staff) are available and willing to discuss issues in dealing with those responsibilities.
Action plans
This includes issues in preparing or lodging a voluntary Action Plan under the DDA. Note that the Commission's web site includes a publication on effective action plans and a register of action plans and implementation reports already given to us, which includes electronic access to the action plans of over 140 organisations.
Temporary exemptions
We are also available to discuss possibilities for seeking a temprorary exemption from provisions of the DDA. A number of organisations have applied for and been granted exemptions for up to five years at a time, in return for commitments to implement measures designed to achieve the objects of the DDA over time.
Most of these exemptions have been in the public transport area, but exemptions can also be granted more broadly than this, including in areas such as employment, education or provision of other services.
We are willing to discuss issues in this area on a private and "without prejudice" basis.
Past exemption decisions and the Commission's policy and procedure in this area are available through the exemptions page on this site.
