Tickets now on sale for 2009 Human Rights Medals and Awards Ceremony

Tickets are now on sale for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s 2009 Human Rights Medals and Awards Ceremony to be held in Sydney on 10 December.

Commission President, Cathy Branson QC - who will also be delivering the annual Human Rights Oration at the luncheon ceremony - said people should purchase tickets now to avoid disappointment.

“This year has been one of the most memorable yet for human rights in Australia with the completion of the National Human Rights Consultation and delivery of its Report calling for a Human Rights Act for Australia and improved human rights education,” Ms Branson said.

“I urge all those who have an interest and a commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in Australia, to purchase tickets now to ensure they can join us on this truly inspiring day.

“By coming along to this annual celebration, you will have the chance to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of these amazing Australians who have worked consistently and passionately throughout the year to protect human rights and promote equality for all of us.

“You will also get to hear first-hand about some of the amazing achievements in a relaxed environment where you can meet with a diverse range of human rights advocates, and enjoy the entertainment provided by MC Julian Morrow from the ABC’s Chaser program.”

The 2009 Human Rights Medal and Young People’s Human Rights Medal will be presented at the ceremony along with awards in the following categories: the community (Individual); Community (Organisation); Law;  Literature (Non-fiction); Print Media; Television; and Radio.

The Australian Human Rights Commission has a web-section, www.humanrights.gov.au/hr_awards, containing all the information about the 2009 Human Rights Medals and Awards, including Award categories, judging criteria, previous winners and how to buy a ticket to the Awards ceremony.

The judging process is now underway and shortlists for each category (except the Human Rights Medal and Young Person’s Human Rights Medal) will be available on the Commission website in November.
