Stolen wages justice for Kooris
Statement by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Dr William Jonas AM
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Social Justice Commissioner Dr William Jonas AM today congratulated the NSW Premier for formally apologising to the Aboriginal people in New South Wales who had their wages stolen or lost between 1900 and 1969 and giving in-principle support for compensation.
The Commissioner also congratulated the Public Interest Advocacy Centre for their commitment over the past two years in advocating for the rights of the Aboriginal people who had their wages stolen or lost.
"It seems now that they will finally receive justice," said Dr Jonas.
"While the Premier's apology is a step in the right direction, I hope it is only the first of many to come. The New South Wales Government must be committed to making any offer of compensation on just and fair terms."
Dr Jonas urged the Premier and NSW Government to not make the same mistake the Queensland Government did in 2002 with its stolen wages case.
"The New South Wales Government must consult with the Aboriginal people affected on an appropriate process for providing compensation, and provide a reasonable and appropriate amount of compensation," Dr Jonas said.
"Also, the government must not seek to indemnify themselves from any further legal action which falls outside the scope of the stolen wages case from any Aboriginal person who accepts an offer of compensation," Dr Jonas said.
