LAUNCH OF SOCIAL
JUSTICE COMMISSIONER'S
2003 SOCIAL JUSTICE and NATIVE TITLE REPORTS
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTAR) invite you to the launch of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner's 2003 annual reports on social justice and native title.
The reports will be tabled in federal Parliament today (10 March 2004).
This year's Social Justice Report 2003 considers:
- progress towards reconciliation, with a focus on government accountability mechanisms;
- progress in the Council of Australian Government's whole-of-government community trials;
- processes for Indigenous participation in decision making, including reform of ATSIC and capacity building initiatives;
- progress in addressing family violence in Indigenous communities and in addressing petrol sniffing on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands; and
- progress in addressing Indigenous disadvantage.

The Native Title Report 2003 evaluates native title as a framework for economic and social development in Indigenous communities. The report considers:
- native title and international standards on development and sustainability;
- native title policies and practices of governments throughout Australia as a framework for economic and social development; and
- comparisons to legal and policy frameworks in Canada and the USA.
