Allegations of discrimination in Townsville

Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner, Dr Bill Jonas, today expressed concern about allegations of discrimination in Townsville and urges State and local authorities to resolve the situation in a way that respects the human rights of all members of the community and their visitors.

Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Susan Booth has briefed Dr Jonas on the situation and they have agreed to make a joint visit in mid-June. Dr Jonas said HREOC's expertise and assistance may be offered if local parties would welcome it.

HREOC is working with the WA Equal Opportunity Commission, ATSIC, the WA Department of Indigenous Affairs and the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City Council on a community relations strategy for Kalgoorlie-Boulder following a visit by Dr Jonas in July 2002. A similar strategy, adapted for local circumstances, may be helpful in Townsville.
