DARWIN FORUM

10 years of Federal Disability Discrimination Laws - Achievements and Challenges

A forum, co-hosted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission, will be held on Tuesday 25 March at the Northern Territory University. The forum will discuss 10 years of achievements under the (federal) Disability Discrimination Act - which came into effect on March 1, 1993 - and challenges for the future.

Before the forum, Human Rights Commissioner Dr Sev Ozdowski will launch a report outlining the achievements made in 10 years under the Act. Great improvements have been made in disability access over the past decade, facilitated in many cases by rapidly evolving technology. Yet there is still a long way to go.

Robyne Burridge will talk about her experience working in the disability sector for over 20 years, and reflect on the changes that have occurred during that time. Robyne was born with Cerebral Palsy, a congenital disability, affecting both lower limbs. She came to the Northern Territory from Sydney following her appointment by the Northern Territory Government to the position of Coordinator, International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP) in 1981.

Since that time Robyne has set up many services for disabled people and has served on numerous Committees and Councils providing high level advice to the three spheres of Government, non-government organisations and community groups.
