National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention - Sydney Public Hearings Deferred

The public hearings for the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention, scheduled to be held in Sydney from Monday 9 September - Thursday 12 September, have been deferred.

This follows a legal submission to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission by the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) requesting deferral of the scheduled public hearings but seeking a separate hearing to discuss matters of confidentiality.

On 12 September the Human Rights Commissioner, Dr Sev Ozdowski, will hold a confidential directions hearing to consider matters raised by DIMIA. As soon as practicable after the hearing, the Commissioner will issue written orders on the issues raised by DIMIA.

This media alert supersedes that of 14 August last regarding the revised dates for the Inquiry's Sydney public hearings.
