Public Hearings for the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention to be held in Melbourne
Public hearings for the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention begin this week in Melbourne. They are to be held on 30th and 31st May at the Australian Institute for Management, 181 Fitzroy St, St Kilda and are the first of a series to be held in Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane over the coming months.
The following people are scheduled to appear (half an hour for each speaker):
Thursday 30th May from 2pm
- Grant Mitchell (Asylum Seekers Project, Hotham Mission)
- Marc Purcell (Justice for Asylum Seekers)
- David Manne (Refugees in Immigration Legal Centre)
- Barbara Rogalla (former Woomera nurse)
- Julian Burnside QC et al (KIDS)
Friday 31st May from 11am
- Lyn Bender (former Woomera psychologist)
- John Tobin (University of Melbourne, Faculty of Law)
- Dr Jill Sewell (Alliance of Professionals Concerned about the Health of Asylum Seekers & their Children)
- Scott Phillips and colleagues (Melbourne International Health and Justice Group, RMIT)
PLEASE NOTE: The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has agreed to suppress names of children, asylum seekers and temporary protection visa (TPV) holders during the hearings in order to not prejudice refugee applications and to protect them from possible repercussions/persecution if they return to their country of origin.
