Social Justice and Native Title Reports 2000

The annual Social Justice and Native Title Reports of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Dr William Jonas, AM, were tabled in Federal Parliament today.

While the Government's response to the reports cites improvements in Indigenous disadvantage, Dr Jonas questions whether these actions are adequate.

At a media conference tomorrow, Dr Jonas will outline why current efforts that are focused mainly on "practical reconciliation" are failing. He will also talk about the limitations of the current native title regime.

A media conference will be held tomorrow at the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, Level 8, Piccadilly Tower, 133 Castlereagh St, Sydney at 11am.

Media contacts: Janine MacDonald (02) 9284 9880 or 0412 783 631 Margie Cook (02) 9284 9677 or 0418 637 230
