Human Rights Issues
Since its establishment in 1986, HREOC has undertaken work across a broad range of human rights issues in Australia.
Some of the human rights issues that have been addressed by the Human Rights Unit include:
- children’s rights
- discrimination on the basis of criminal record
- discrimination in employment
- euthanasia
- freedom of religion
- gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex equality
- housing and homelessness
- immigration detention, asylum seekers and refugees
- prisoner’s rights
- the right to vote
- the human rights of rural Australians.
The Human Rights Unit also works with other units within HREOC on issues including:
- individual human rights complaints
- discrimination against women
- discrimination against people with a disability
- discrimination against the elderly
- race discrimination and
- social justice for Australia’s Indigenous Peoples.
